Managing Hypermobility & Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome at The Body Mechanic

Hypermobility, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and (Hypermobile) Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (of which there are many sub-categories) present unique challenges that require specialised care. At The Body Mechanic, we understand the complexities of these conditions and offer highly-tailored treatments to help manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and help enhance overall wellbeing.

Our comprehensive approach to help with your hypermobility/hEDS, includes Osteopathy, Advanced Clinical Massage and Manual Therapy, and these treatments address the specific needs of those with diagnosed – or suspected – hypermobility in all its forms.

Understanding Hypermobility, EDS and HSD

Hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders involved excessive flexiblity and instability in the joints, which can lead to pain, frequent injuries (including dislocations), and other complications.

Effective management of these conditions requires a multidisciplinay approach to support joint stability, muscle strength, and overall function.

Those diagnosed with EDS often have many other conditions and disorders that can have more of an impact on their life, besides their hypermobility. Conditions such as stomach orthostatic tachycardia, digestive disorders, pelvic and bladder dysfunction, anxiety and behavioural disorders (ADD/ADHD/ASD), and mental health conditions.

At The Body Mechanic, we take all of this into consideration whilst treating – and supporting – you.

Osteopathy for Hypermobility & EDS

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR FIRST VISIT

We will start the healing process from your very first visit. All first visits include a thorough initial consultation with assessment and treatment.

Here’s what to expect:

First treatment for Hypermobility/EDS

If you’re new to The Body Mechanic, or haven’t been seen by one of our practitioners in over 3 months, your first visit will be an Initial Consultation with treatment.

The consultation part of the treatment involves finding out relevant information about your health history, current overall health, current presenting issue/s, and health goals.

Your first treatment is time to get to the root cause of your issue/s, start getting you out of pain and discomfort, and formulate a plan to reduce your pain and discomfort and help you move better.

Physical Assessment

Depending on the presenting issues you have, we will assess your condition through a variety of special tests, to either confirm or rule-out any conditions that may be part of the issue/s your experience.

Our assessment ensures that we can further fine-tune the hands-one portion of your first visit treatment.

Treat

With the relevant information gathered from finding out about your health history, current issue(s) and results from any assessments we’ve done, your practitioner can then create a more tailored approach to the hands-on part of your treatment.

The hands-on treatment also serves as an assessment.

What we discover here, will determine whether we give you any aftercare or rehab exercises, advise on any subsequent treatment and work with you to reach your health and wellbeing goals.

Aftercare / Follow-up sessions

As we’ve metioned under ‘Treat’, depending on your presenting issue/s, and health goals, we typically provide ongoing support so you know what wellness ‘tools and techniques’ to use in everyday life, to help with your hypermobility or EDS.

We will also talk to you about any recommended follow-up sessions, and what this may look like for you. Follow-up sessions could either be with your practitioner, or we may recommend a colleague, should they be an even better fit for you and your condition/s.

We always want to ensure we get you the fastest, safest results, in the shortest (but most realistic) space of time.
